August
18, 2010 People,
Water,
water everywhere. Mosquitoes by the billions. Three feet of water in my
basement. Lost my air conditioning. Slept in a house that was 93 degrees.
Life isn't always fun. BUT IT IS AT BYRON'S!!! Remember my new slogan,
"Byron's, to forget about life for a while." What a great time
to practice that slogan. After a week off with no music, it comes back
with a vengeance. Two, yes TWO fabulous shows this weekend. Think of it
as an end of summer fling. First, Saturday night, August 21, 2010, family
and friends of Emily Gray and Paul Mogensen will be celebrating
their upcoming wedding. And what better way than having a street dance
with our favorite band Brother Trucker. Music starts at 9 and goes til
1. This show will be free but there will be a donation jar to help Emily
and Paul pay for the band. I hope all of you know of Brother Trucker and
my love of them and their music. This is, seriously folks, one of the
best bands to ever come from Iowa. Andy Flemings lyrics are great and
to quote Brother Trucker's bio, Fleming’s wondrous gift for illuminating
lives in the margins—of the ignored, the luckless, the forgotten
and the invisible, self-destructive beings who’ve fallen through
cracks in a society that’s off the rails. Then add in a band that
ROCKS those lyrics and wow. Mike Fitzpatrick has an amazing
style of playing a guitar. I have often said that he is channeling that
from somewhere but I have come to conclude it is just coming from his
soul. Add in Lyle Kevin Hogue to put down that foundation
bass line and again, wow. Now, to top that all off they have added Matt
Jesson and Jim Viner to the roster. Matt plays keyboards that
adds so much to the full sound of Brother Trucker. Jim plays the drums,
which along with the bass, really sets the rhythm of the band and Jim
does this with aplomb. Altogether, Brother Trucker is a band not to be
missed. Can you tell I like these guys??
Oh, by the way, bring lawn chairs for the street dance and I forgot to
mention that this will be the first band to play on the brand new Downtown
Pomeroy Performing Arts Center Stage located right across the
street from Byron's.
Then, to top off this weekend escape, stay over, camping or floor space
available, or come back, for more magical music on August 22,
2010. If you stay over, you can experience the new Pomeroy
Cafe, run by my friend Amber Danneman. She cooks a mean breakfast with
all fresh ingredients. By the time that has digested it will
be time for the return of David Olney and Sergio Webb
from Nashville, Tn. David lives across the street of another of my favorites,
Will Kimbrough. The first time David and Sergio played here, they blew
me away. I had been listening to their music and loved it but seeing them
right in front of me put a smile on my face that did not go away for a
while. This is how his website describes David.
"The prolific David Olney infuses his live performances with an intensity
that converts many new listeners into die-hard fans. Mr. Olney’s
intelligent compositions radiate that same intensity and have earned a
place as one of the most respected singer-songwriters in the world today.
His songs have been recorded by Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Del McCoury,
Lonnie Brooks, James King, Slaid Cleaves, Dale Ann Bradley, Tom Rozum,
Ann Rabson, Keiran Kane/Kevin Welch/Fats Kaplin, Tim O’Brien and
others. He has released more than 20 albums over four decades, including
six live recordings, and performs worldwide." Sergio Webb plays guitar
in the style of Bo Ramsey, in that he plays minimal notes but plays with
deep emotion. And wait until you hear him on the megaphone. This show
starts at 5 pm and is a $10 ticket. Come out and smile with me.
I haven't heard back from them yet but keep next weekend open for Mark
Stuart and the Bastard Sons on Sunday 29, 2010. This might not happen
but OHHH if it does.
Well, that is it for music at Byron's for the summer. Almost makes me
cry to think of winter but that is far far away, lol. Coming in September
is Branden Scott Sellner on September 12, 2010. More on this
show later.
SEE YOU AT THE SHOWS.
Let there be songs to fill the air.
August
2, 2010 Newsletter. People,
UGH!!
It is August already. Where did summer go? Seems like after July 4th,
the summer just flies. Well, there is still some great music coming at
Byron's. First comes this Friday August 6, 2010 when Lonesome Traveler
returns for their third appearance at Byron's This is an acoustic band
from Colorado’s front range with a bluegrass driver’s license,
a certificate of songwriting, and a sheriff’s badge of cool. They
possess the cracklin’ firepower of a six-piece band, yet the grace
of a dancer as they weave in and around their condenser microphones, singing,
picking, and testifying to the gospel of Americana music. Like a kaleidoscope,
it is hard not to smile when you listen to Bluegrass and Lonesome Traveler
does it with panache. See you there.
Then a little break before Brother Trucker returns to rock the streets
of Pomeroy Saturday August 21, 2010. Byron's is having another street
dance. This time to celebrate my niece Emily Gray and my future nephew
Paul Mogensen's stag and stagette party. Show starts at 9ish and the show
is FREE. There will be a donation jar to help Paul and Emily pay for the
band. This show will be a HOOT.
Don't kill all off your brain cells because you might want to save a few
to enjoy a phenomenal singer/songwriter David Olney with guitar virtuoso
Sergio Webb the next day, Sunday August 22, 2010. David and Sergio played
Byron's once before and after only one song I knew that I wanted to hear
them again. Seriously folks, this is going to be great. David is a contemporary
of Jerry Jeff Walker and has had his music recorded by Emmylou Harris,
Linda Ronstadt and Del McCoury. It will be like being at Austin City Limits.
That is it for August. The music will be HOT but remember Byron's is air
conditioned and the beer and friendship will be flowing.
Remember also, LIVE MUSIC ONLY HAPPENS ONCE, YOU HAVE TO BE THERE.
Let there be songs to fill the air.
June 16, 2010 Newsletter People,
Wow,
wow, wow, wow, wow, etc. That is the only words I can come up with after
last Sundays show. It was a magical day at Byron's. First Andy
Fleming graced the stage along with Lyle Kevin Hogue playing bass. I love
Andy's music and lyrics. He brought up David Zollo and BeJae Fleming for
his last three songs. Then BeJae Fleming played and sang some of the most
awesome music I have ever heard. BeJae is a treat to listen to.
From the first time you hear her, you fall in love with her. Then David
Zollo sang a bunch of new songs, telling stories of where they came from.
Then for an encore, all of them got on stage and sang their hearts out.
Three of the best songwriters in Iowa, each on the top of their
game, each giving 120%, each having the time of their lives.
It was truly LIVE MUSIC, you had to be there.
Enough of the past, now to the future. Week three of Byron's schedule.
And what a finale for a month of excellent music. Bruce Katz is
coming to share his incredible talent at Byron's on Sunday, June 20,
2010 at 5 pm for a paltry $10 ticket. Here is what people
in the know have to say about Bruce.
"He can play
jazz, blues, Bach, anything. Man, he's a heavy!"
- Gregg Allman
"This man is as good as it
gets. One of the greatest keyboard artists I've ever heard."
- John Hammond
"Now
that's a piano player!"
- Pinetop Perkins
"Katz showcases his jazz-meets-blues
chops on both the Hammond B-3 organ and piano, with the results sounding
something like a progressive, post-bop jazz group heavily into early-period
Ray Charles......rootsy and intelligent improvisational music."
- Matt Collar, All Music Guide To Blues
Now, that is some recommendations. Bruce
plays keyboards for the Gregg Allman Band and last year due to a wrist
injury for Gregg Allman, Bruce toured with the Allman Brothers.
This is going to be "GOOD". I am expecting a good crowd so I
would recommend getting to Byron's early.
Well, that is it for June but oh what a June. But it doesn't end there.
July brings even more great music to Byron's. Starting on July
10, 2010 with Byron's Annual Street Dance. This year starts off
with Rob Lumbard at 5ish, followed by The Creek Dwellers, and then headlining
is Tequila Sunrise. Put your good vibes out for dry weather.
More on this later. Also in July, Studebaker John, Sunday July
18, 2010. Saturday, July 24, 2010 brings
Midwestern Remedy back to Byron's. Then, Sunday July 25, Kevin Gordon
is returning to share his talent. Friday,
July 30, 2010 brings Johnny Reeferseed and the
Highrollers back. Again, WOW, what a schedule. Come on out and
listen to some fantastic music.
And, just for a heads up. Mark your calendars for Sunday, August
22, 2010, when David Olney and Sergio Webb return to Byron's. Any
of you that witnessed these two last year knows what a fantastic duo this
is. Another DO NOT MISS show.
Whew, I am exhausted thinking of how much fun I am going to have at Byron's
this summer. Tell everyone you know to come to Byron's and forget about
life for a while.
LIVE MUSIC ONLY HAPPENS ONCE, YOU HAVE TO BE THERE.
Roger Feldhans is having an Art Reception, The Other
Side of the Eye, this Friday, June 18, 2010 at Permanent Collections Gallery
Art, 921 Central Avenue, Fort Dodge, Iowa. Reception starts at
5 pm and features another friend, Denny Simon (of Tequila Sunrise)
playing guitar and promoting his new CD Andromeda.
Come out, see some amazing art and hear some great music.
Snacks will be provided by Scrumptious Baking Company aka Amber Danneman.
Roger is showing his amazing art and it will be for sale. Roger is an
amazing artist in many mediums. I own several of Roger's pieces and recommend
that you own some also.
Let there be songs to fill the air.

June 10, 2010
People,Well, week one of Byron's Schedule is over but what a memory Week
One was. Biscuit Miller and the Mix were fantastic. Even after
traveling 14 hours to reach Pomeroy, they had the energy of a young Michael
Jackson. Biscuit can really cut a rug. Two new guitar players for Biscuit,
but boy could they play. And Dr Love on drums, what more do you need to
say. These guys are so entertaining. If you ever get the chance, go see
them.
Now onto Week Two. I am so psyched for this show. This
is going to be a magical musical moment. Probably will never happen again.
Byron's is bringing in three of the best singer/songwriters East of Highway
169 to share songs, stories, music and friendship. Oh, yeah, who is it?
David Zollo, premiere keyboardist and former Trailer Record Company
head, BeJae Fleming, guitar playing, singing pixie of a woman with a heart
as big as a BP Oil Spill, and Andy Fleming, extraordinary author of so
many Brother Trucker hits. I don't think my words can fully describe
what a great afternoon this will be. You music lovers know that. Don't
wake up on Monday and say Dammit, I should have traveled to see that show.
Bonfire after the show and plenty of tent camping space available. Weather
is supposed to be great. Come out and experience Byron's and forget about
life for awhile.
Oh yeah, show is at 5 pm for only $10 which gets you one free
drink and a chance at some of the best door prizes in Pomeroy.
Doors open at 3 p.m. I
am hoping to see a bunch of my Des Moines friends here for this one and
they are traveling 2 hours. See you all there.
And don't forget Week Three next Sunday, June 20, 2010. Bruce
Katz, keyboardist for the Gregg Allman Band, is bringing his
talent to share at Byron's for a 5 pm show for a mere $10.
More bragging on Bruce and pleading with you to come will be printed next
week.
Wow, what do you think? Is that a great lineup? Then rest up, cause the
music keeps coming.
July brings Byron's Annual Street Dance with Rob Lumbard, The
Creek Dwellers, and Tequila Sunrise, fronted by the best singer/songwriter
west of Highway 169. Street Dance is July 10th. July
18, 2010 brings Studebaker John back. July 24,
2010 brings Midwestern Remedy back. Friday
July 30 brings Johnny Reeferseed and the High Rollers back.
Plus maybe another surprise show. More on that later.
That is it for now.
Remember LIVE MUSIC ONLY HAPPENS ONCE, YOU HAVE TO BE THERE.
June
1, 2010 Newsletter
I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend.
I know I did. I saw some music at the Havelock Bar, golfed in two golf
tournaments, and ate great food. Now it is on to SUMMER!! I have an amazing
line up of acts for June, 2010. First, Sunday, June 6, 2010, brings
the return of Biscuit Miller and the Mix for a 6 pm show.
Biscuit is traveling from Oklahoma so a later starting time was in order.
Biscuit is traveling a long ways but he said he wanted to play Byron's
again and promises a special show. Biscuit had so much fun last time that
he sent a thank you card to Byron's. Biscuit Miller picked up a bass guitar
when he was 11 and hasn't put it down since. He formed his first band
in 1982 and has played with Sonny Rogers, Muddy Waters, Ike and Tina Turner,
Lonnie Brooks, and Anthony Gomes. Fronting his own band has always been
Biscuit's dream and the Mix revisits the old recipe of a mix of funk,
blues, and old style rock and roll soul. What better way to start your
summer than with the Blues. Biscuit Miller and the Mix will satisfy your
thirst. See you there. $10 Ticket gets you entrance, one free
drink, and chance at some of the best door prizes in Pomeroy.
June, part deux, Sunday June 13, 2010 will be a day to go down
in Iowa musical history. Byron's has the privilege of bringing
in 3 of the best songwriters in Iowa to share their talents in a intimate
setting like Byron's. Beginning at 5 pm you will be able to hear David
Zollo, BeJae Fleming, and Brother Trucker's own Andy Fleming.
These amazing three will share songs, stories, and memories for all who
come to the show. This show was supposed to happen last year but Mother
Nature had other plans. I never thought this show would ever happen again
because BeJae moved to Ohio, but she informed me that she was spending
June in Iowa and we got this to happen. I am telling you, this is going
to be one for the memory books. The show is at 5 pm and will be a mere
$10 ticket.
June, part three. I know, you ask yourself. How can Byron's top those
two great acts? Well, I don't know if I topped them, but I was contacted
by Bruce Katz, who said that he wanted to
play my place. I Googled him only to find out that he
is the keyboardist for the Gregg Allman Band and toured last year with
The Allman Brothers. I immediately told him "YES!". So, put
this show on your schedule. In fact you might want to get tickets early
to this one. Bruce Katz is playing Byron's on Sunday, June 20,
2010 at 5 pm for a measly $10.
WOW! WOW! WOW! Is that not a fantastic line up. I hope some of you did
also. Such great music in an intimate little setting. It doesn't get any
better than this. Spread the word for me.
I have come up with a new saying for Byron's. With all the troubles in
the world today. With oil spills, bad economy, and personal tragedies,
BYRON'S, to forget about life for a while!
Remember, LIVE music only happens once, you have to be there.
May 5, 2010 Newsletter People,
First
off, I want to thank my friend, Dave Hearn. He wrote
a song about Byron's. I am a little biased, but I think
it is the best song written in 2010. Every time I hear
it, I start dancing and smiling. As soon as I can figure out how to post
it, I will let you all hear it. Oh, I better ask Dave if I can share it.
Dave was a member of the Hawks, 2007 inductees into the Iowa Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame.
Now, for music I can share. Mark your calendar, gas up the car, drive
the short distance, to see The Mighty Short Bus on Mother's Day,
Sunday, May 9, 2010. They will rock your socks off. I love these
guys. And, it will be the first time to purchase their new CD,
The Forever Endeavor, west of the Mississippi. It is a 5 pm show for a
measly $10. Seriously folks, this is a fun
band. Bring your Moms, she might think they're HOT! You
will be smiling when you leave Byron's. See you there.
Then on Friday, May 21, 2010, The
Jacob Lee Band returns to Byron's. Hailing from Galva,
Iowa, Jacob Lee is an up and coming blues guitarist. Local drummer,
Russell Weller is also in the band. This will be Russell's
last performance as he is graduating from Buena Vista College.
Show starts at 9 pm and will be a $5 Cover.
Save up your brain cells, because on Sunday, May 23, 2010, Byron's
has two-time Iowa Blues Challenge winners, Matt Woods and the Thunderbolts,
coming for a 5 pm show for $10 Ticket. Matt will be promoting
his newest CD Be My Friend. If you get the chance give it a listen.
That is it for May. But, I cannot believe the line up of talent Byron's
has planned for June. June 6, 2010 brings Bisquit Miller
back for a 5 pm show for $10 Ticket. June 13, 2010 is a show I never thought
would happen. After being cancelled last year because of snow, I never
thought logistics would ever work for this to happen again. Byron's has
3 of Iowa's best singer/songwriters coming to share their talents for
a 5 pm show for $10. I suppose I should tell you who they are. Drum Roll
Please. It is David Zollo, BeJae Fleming, and from Brother
Trucker, Andy Fleming. And if that wasn't enough, Bruce
Katz will be sharing his talent on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 5
pm for $10 Ticket. Bruce Katz is the organ player in the Gregg
Allman Band and last year toured
with the Allman Brothers. Too Cool, to be able to see
such great acts in the intimate setting of Byron's. I AM STOKED.
AND, there is more planned for July!!!
That's it. I am tired just writing this, just think how tired I will be
after all of this great music.
Remember, live music only happens once, you have to be there.
Let there be songs to fill the air.
PEACE

starts at 9ish and will be a FREE show. It is extremely
difficult for me to say "FREE". But it isn't my birthday, lol.
Come out and help us celebrate.
Then, it is a week break before The Mighty Short Bus returns to

People,
Well, it has been a week. Has everyone forgiven me for my "cruel"
April Fools post? I love that day. Now, back to the regularly scheduled
programming. Music is back at Byron's. Deadman Flats is sharing
their talents this Sunday, April 11, 2010. Hailing from the great
state of Kansas, Deadman Flats hits you hard with a finger-bleeding, head-banging,
neck-breaking dose of what can be described as the definition of "Redneckery".
What this means is they play "FAST". Show starts at 5 pm and
costs a mere $10. Remember, that $10 gets you one free drink and a chance
at some of the greatest door prizes in Pomeroy. See you there.
Next, Sunday, April 18, 2010 brings The High Crest to Byron's.
High Crest is Aaron Short of the Creek Dwellers and his
lovely wife, Kat Darling. The High Crest brings you some
of the prettiest music out there. An afternoon of Americana music at its
finest. 5 pm show for that same measly $10.
Put Saturday, April 24, 2010 on your calendar. Roger Feldhans,
the TYDYGY, turns '50' on
4/20, and we are celebrating that and Rox Welanders birthdays
that night. Denny Simon of Tequila Sunrise, will be playing
and promoting his new solo
CD, Andromeda. This is a FREE show. (Wow, a little something
just came up my throat. It is hard for me to say FREE!) Come out and help
Roger celebrate his receiving of the beloved AARP Card.
That's it for Byron's music in April but more coming after that, including
The Mighty Short Bus on May 9th. Don't forget Bruce
Katz on June 20, 2010 and Byron's Annual Street Dance on July 10, 2010.
More on these shows later.
Everyone. Roger Feldhans is having an art show at the Ritual Cafe

at an April Fools joke turn prophetic.
Let there be songs to fill the air.
People,
First off, I want to thank everyone for the birthday wishes. I am so blessed
to have so many great friends. Thanks to everyone that came to Joe
and Vicki Price. It was a blast. Thanks, Roger, the TyDyGy, for
the amazing tie dye tapestry and shirt. You are the best. I was looking
through my Oriental Trading Company catalog and saw red wax lips and immediately
thought, my birthday party. It was hilarious seeing almost everyone
in big red lips. Joe and Vicki jumped right into the fray. It
was a memorable party.
Now, on to the future. No rest for the pickled. This Sunday, February
21, 2010, brings back one of my favorites, Larry Garner.
5 pm show $10 ticket. Seriously folks, this guy is the real deal. A great
entertainer. He has an awesome back up band and tells the greatest stories
that lead into the next song. And a sweetheart to boot. Beat the WHITE
with the BLUES!!
Then, a week off. A week closer to spring. YEAH!! Then it is March. March
7, 2010, Harper. Australian Blues. He plays the didgeridoo. Then,
on Friday, yes Friday, March 12, 2010, brings Lonesome Traveler
back to Byron's. A fantastic bluegrass band from Colorado. Finally,
Sunday, March 28, 2010, blues harmonica player Bill Lupkin
is playing. More on these shows later. I have to get to work.

Hello All, 2nd Saturday is next weekend. Roger Feldhans will be
offering a free course at the College of Leonard, 106 S Main,
Downtown Pomeroy. I quote, " I am going to offer a beginners digital
slr camera class, starting at 10am, no cost, just bring
your camera, and owner's manual if you have one. Going to go
over the basics of camera operation, do some actual picture taking and
discussions of shots. This will be very casual. No pressure, just
fun."
On Sunday, Mother's Day, the Fonda
Art Center will be open. I quote again, "A very special

The second hour of music will feature Rebecca Nickles of Palmer, Rebecca

in Orange City, Iowa. Renèe and Jessica are daughters of Ron and
Deb Ausborn of Lytton. Complementing the afternoon will be the artistry

factory in Austria, and are the elements of Bobbie’s finished products.

At the Kaleidoscope Factory I'll be working
on lots of things. The tourist season began a couple weeks ago and the

of Iowa Public TV have shown up. I'll be on the May 6th episode of Iowa's
Simple Pleasures. More here on other upcoming episodes.

Also this weekend, from Annie
Reiff at the Fonda Arts Center:
"Hi everyone! Another great 2nd
Sunday at the Fonda Arts Center! Hope you can come! annie
“L.A.’s Best Kept Secret”
are the words used by Music Connection Magazine to describe the extraordinary
talent of singer/songwriter, Alan Morphew, an Estherville native,
and guest musician at the at the Fonda Arts Center’s Music/Art Drop-in
Sunday, April 11th in the afternoon from 2:00 till 4:00. Alan plays folk
rock, with elements of country and 70’s classic rock thrown in.
Exhibiting an outstanding voice with an impressive range, and moving effortlessly
from lower notes to a crowd- pleasing falsetto, his lyrics reflect his
passions, ranging from personal and introspective to the socially conscious
and political. The visual side of art will be presented in the
photography of Anne Andresen of rural Holstein . Taking her camera
with her practically everywhere she goes, Anne
captures many a “Kodak Moment” with her ability
to frame the beauty in everything she sees. The “Around
Siouxland” calendar is Anne’s “claim to fame”,
using one of her photos for the month of October. We
hope you can join us at The Fonda Arts Center, located
in Fonda on the northwest corner of 4th and Main . As always, free admission,
free refreshments! "
On Sunday the 11th at Byron's, Deadman Flats from Lawrence

March 11, 2010 Newsletter: First,
the bad news. The historical society won't be putting on the pork loin
dinner this weekend as Bob Schossow, one of the driving forces in the
group, suffered burns in a fire this week.
The Pomeroy Cafe is open and we encourage you to give them a try. My Red
Hat Ladies and tour bus groups all give them a "thumbs up".
Speaking of "open", we just noticed that a lot of new businesses
have sprung up in Pomeroy recently. Attached is a new
map with a few of the news ones listed. More on that subject at a
later date.
Now from Byron:
March 12, 2010, Lonesome Traveler is returning to the stage at Byron's.
Lonesome Traveler indeed. This is an acoustic band from Colorado’s
front range with a bluegrass driver’s license, a certificate of
songwriting, and a sheriff’s badge of cool. They possess the cracklin’
firepower of a six-piece band, yet the grace of a dancer as they weave
in and around their condenser microphones, singing, picking, and testifying
to the gospel of Americana music. These guys are fun. Too much at times.
And From Annie Reiff in Fonda:
Hi Friends! Here comes another 2nd Sunday at the Fonda Arts Center! This
will be a fun day, and the weather WILL cooperate! Another date for your
calendar is April 25th when the Al Welsh Orchestra will, once again, bring
us an evening of music & dancing at Fonda’s KC Hall. More on
this later! But for now I hope you can join us on March 14th! Annie Reiff

Melt away the winter blahs as the Fonda Arts Center presents its Music/Art
Drop-in Sunday, the afternoon of March 14th from 2:00 till 4:00 . This
second Sunday features the music of singer/songwriter, Al Sroufe and Friends
from Rolfe and the artistry of mother-daughter team, Sarah and Lisa Rasmussen
of Goldfield. Sarah, a teenager with a passion for style, fashion and
fun, makes her own original jewelry creations, “Love, Lou Lou”.
Sarah’s mother, Lisa, well known for her efforts as president of
the Humboldt Arts Council and heading up the Humboldt Art Festival, creates
cards and soldered jewelry under the “Lofty Designs” name.
Both will be demonstrating their art and have items to sell. Al is a favorite
at the Fonda Arts Center , always bringing with him his ready smile and
laid-back music style. Come & relax with us at the Fonda Arts Center
on the northwest corner of Fourth & Main Streets in Fonda. As always,
free admission, free refreshments!

Today is the beginning of Festival, Iowa Public Television's Spring fund

Simple Pleasures" in Pomeroy at The Kaleidoscope Factory and at Byron's.
We'll be on the May 6th episode. On March 15th the premier episode will
air.

It hasn't snowed all month! And, our record breaking snowfall is starting
to melt. Only 20 more days until the first tour bus. YES!
February 10, 2010 Newsletter: It's Second Saturday
in Pomeroy Again! For those of you who have never seen snow, stop in.
You're in for a treat. It hasn't been near as bad as my cousins in ND
have it, but I've had to play lots of mental tricks on myself to keep
the attitude positive. One is - "Only 44 more days till the 1st tour
bus. YEAH!"
Here's another good thing coming up. Last summer a crew from Iowa Public
TV was here and filmed the Kaleidoscope Factory and Byron's. Soon, we'll
get to see the results. They don't say what's on it, but here's the first
episode.
http://www.iptv.org/series.cfm/20774/iowas_simple_pleasures/ep:0
We'll be in one of the 6 or 7 episodes they create. Also, during their
spring pledge drive the DVD containing our footage will be a gift at some
level of contribution. For gifts of $75 or more, both Byron and I have
agreed to participate in their membercard program.
http://www.iptv.org/friends/membercard.cfm
I'm excited about spring and it isn't just because we'll get
rid of all this snow. I'll let you know when we're going to be on.
February 1st, 2010 News Letter:
The only thing good about January is all the snow and bad weather that
keeps me cooped up inside. Because when I'm inside, I make kaleidoscopes.
I mentioned the new dichroic teleidoscopes in the last newsletter and
briefly mentioned the fill-your-own scopes. I made a few last year, but
they flew off the shelves and I never got around to making more.
I've made lots more and tonight I put a web page up about them so you
can learn more about them.
http://www.kaleidoscopefactory.com/products/fill-your-own-scopes.htm
Actually I hate the snow & cold, but thinking of all the kaleidoscopes
I can make is the only way I can cope with the cooping. Only 52 days until
the first tour bus of the Spring. I can't wait!
I'll have more news later on this topic, but The Kaleidoscope Factory
& Byron's will be featured on Iowa Public TV this spring. Stay tuned....
January 29, 2010 News Letter: Had a fun one today.
A while back I answered an inquiry from an author & art marketing
consultant named Alyson B. Stanfield. She's writing a new book about artists
using social media successfully and I shared how I have the Facebook page
with free images and how I embed my last 5 Tweets in my tourism page so
visitors know what to expect before they come here.
A couple weeks ago I developed a new teleidoscope and in the
process of getting the word out on the Internet I made a discovery which
I shared with Alyson. She asked me to be her guest blogger and today she
published the results.
A great cure
for cabin fever is to stop in sometime and experience the dichroic teleidoscopes.
Last year I made a few "fill-your-own" scopes which sold out quickly
so I've produced quite a few of them too. Bring in your diamonds and try
them in the fill-your-own scopes.
2nd
Saturday in December. Lucky Pomeroy - we got the REAL
Santa who was here from 10:30 until around noon
at the community building. Few people know that Santa has never been able
to figure out how to make a kaleidoscope so he outsources the work to all
the kaleidoscope artists around the world. I have to meet with him about
some I'm making for him so I will be unavailable at my shop until after
he leaves.
Santa visited with kids in Pocahontas. To see his picture,
go to http://www.studiocpoky.com/
Then, click "view and order". After that page loads run your mouse
pointer over "Santa Pictures". Note the genuine gray hair &
beard. THAT's how you can tell it's the real one!
Many times my visitors here are on an adventure which includes trying some
wonderful food in the Greater Pomeroy Area. The Carnegie Cafe in
Lake City and Sister Sadie's Tea Room in Fort Dodge get the best reviews.
Here's a new choice that I highly recommend:
http://messengernews.net/page/content.detail/id/519749.html
Having lived in Denver and traveled around a bit; some of my favorite eating
experiences were in hibachi restaurants. A group of people, some of whom
you'd never met before would sit around a grill and watch as your meal was
prepared by a very entertaining chef. I miss that and couldn't wait to try
the new restaurant in Ft Dodge. Chen
Garden is a bit different from what I expected in that the
hibachi grill is part of a large buffet. Still very entertaining! Around
the corner you can get eel roll and several other sushi items. Fresh fruit
to the left. Traditional Chinese buffet to the south. Wonderful! and only
$6.49 on weekdays for lunch. So many of the restaurants around
here compete for who can make the most fatty and starchy food. For those
of us with heart disease & diabetes, Chen Garden is a real treat. You
don't often find "tastes good" and "healthy"
on the same plate.
Finally, the Downtown Pomeroy Market will be open in the mini mall from
9-12. Tomatoes and sweet corn are obviously done, but there will be several
offerings of baked items.
Thanks to all of you for another good year. 2010 is already
looking good. Iowa Public TV will be doing a little feature
on me this winter and I already have a tour bus confirmed for March. That's
way before the tourism season which usually starts for me Easter weekend.
I'll still be open on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1-9 and Saturdays from
10-5 through the winter. I'm always happy to receive guests and if you'd
like to stop in when I'm not open, just page me at (515) 574 1615 and enter
your number from your phone keypad when the robot asks for it.
I've revamped the products page on my website. http://www.kaleidoscopefactory.com/products/
I took everything off except the kaleidoscopes for now but the other items
will be back soon and with more selections. I've also added another kaleidoscope.
I'm currently sold out of that model, but when I get some ready I'll let
you know. They have a container where you put your own objects in.
I've also started producing more items for the kitchen
and will be adding them soon too.
Here's a recent article listing the Pomeroy Tornado Museum
and some other new Iowa Attractions.

Thank
you Sioux City Journal!
There was an article about me in the Sioux City Journal and as I was wandering
around the Clay County Fair in September, the orders started coming in via
